Ethno-Goggles: Supporting Field Capture of Qualitative Material

back to programme Back to Programme

Tennent, Paul; Crabtree, Andrew; Greenhalgh, Chris (University of Nottingham)

This paper will describe Ethno-Goggles, a hardware extension to the digital replay system (DRS), which supports the task of capturing the heterogeneous media associated with field work. The hardware consists a glasses-mounted camera, a set of in-ear microphones and a PDA for taking synchronised field notes. The system takes a "see-what-I-see" and "hear-what-I-hear" approach to capturing a recording of a piece of field work, allowing the analyst to focus on the business of conducting his study, rather than the logistical tasks associated with recoding it. The system interfaces with a mobile version of DRS, running on a laptop, carried in a rucksack, which automatically digitises and synchronises all the recorded data, presenting it for analysis within the DRS environment.
