Tutorial 3: Designing and Sharing Workflows with Taverna and myExperiment

back to programme Back to Programme

Katy Wolstencroft and Franck Tanoh

The aims of this tutorial are to:

- understand the use of workflows in eScience and provide an overview of Taverna
- understand how to design and execute workflows in Taverna
- understand the value of workflow reuse and sharing and provide an overview of myExperiment, a social networking site for scientists using workflows

This one-day hands-on tutorial is based on the workflows component of Manchester 's well-know program of e-Science.

The program for the day is as follows:

* Introduction to workflows

  • .  Overview of myGrid and Taverna
  • .  Case Studies - eScience research

*A practical guide to Taverna and myExperiment

  • .  Invoking services and building simple workflows
  • .  Running and monitoring Workflows
  • .  Sharing workflows with myExperiment
  • .  Reusing and extending workflows
  • .  Advanced workflow topics - iteration, control-flow and failover

* Discussion of workflow issues

Dr. Katy Wolstencroft is a post-doctoral researcher on the myGrid project. She runs the myGrid outreach program, providing regular training courses and consultancy for workflow design. Her background is in Bioinformatics and Bio-ontologies and her research interests are centred around workflows, e-Science and ontologies and the application of cutting edge computer science technologies to biological problems.

Franck Tanoh is responsible for the curation and annotation of web services used by Taverna. As member of the myGrid outreach team, he also provides regular Taverna training course. He has a background in Bioinformatics and currently involved in the creation of a registry of annotated biological web services.
