Collaborative E-Science for Spatial Decision-Making in Distributed Environments (ECOSENSUS)

Principal investigator - Dr Andrea Berardi (a.berardi@open.ac.uk)

Co-Principal Investigators - Dr Jay Mistry, Dr Simon Buckingham-Shum, Dr Martin Reynolds, Prof. Werner Ulrich

Start Date - August 2005

Duration - 18 months

Location - Open University

Website - http://kmi.open.ac.uk/projects/ecosensus/

This project aims to be the first e-science initiative on developing and testing a distributed computational infrastructure for supporting spatial decision making within an international natural resource management context. The research will be carried out through the production and presentation of a problem based course and will use distinctive social science methodologies for investigating the evolution and impact of the project. The research method is based on Soft Systems approaches for information systems development, regarded as one of the few more effective approaches to emphasise the social component of information systems development. The project will deliver enhanced grid-based open source software tools, open source e-science capacity building resources, a human-centred understanding of the application of e-science tools, and will undertake a range of dissemination activities aimed at supporting ESRC's e-social science strategy.
